Spartanburg was selected by the national Way to Wellville initiative because there are many needs in our community as highlighted in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's County Health Rankings and University of South Carolina Upstate's Racial Equity Index.
But the national Wellville team wasn't just looking for communities in crisis. It wanted to partner with communities that were already showing progress through collaboration, strong community partnerships, and innovative new ideas. The Way to Wellville recognized Spartanburg's spirit of collaboration among community leaders and organizations as well as the significant progress that had been made over the past decade toward making the community healthier. Our city's leaders, businesses, health systems, universities, and numerous nonprofits are all collectively motivated to work together to accelerate our local health and economic vitality. This collaboration, focus, and energy led to Spartanburg being chosen as one of only five communities to be part of the Wellville challenge. And, also notably, in 2015, Spartanburg County was named a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Culture of Health Prize winner for its data-driven decision making and collaborative spirit.
